Our first project, "Project Voiceless" is a digital memory center in which refugees and migrants can narrate their own experiences of hate speech and discrimination that they faced during their daily lives in Turkey. Within the scope of the project, refugees and immigrants residing in different cities of Turkey were reached and addressed the question of “What was the most discriminative situation that you had to face while living in Turkey?” In response to this question, the stories provided by the interviewees with their own voices were adapted into animation video and podcast series.
Given its geopolitical location as a transition country, migration has always been on the agenda of Turkey. However, Turkey’s transformation from a transition country to a host country has not always been easy. Over the last years, the country has experienced many incidents in which the prominent anti-refugee/migrant discourse in the media triggered hate attacks, lynch attempts, and violent uprisings targeting refugees and migrants in various regions. Examination of the main discourses in migration reporting is a key to understand this currently rising anti-refugee and migrant statements at the societal level in Turkey. On this basis, the research we’ve conducted in cooperation with Heinrich Böll Stiftung Thessaloniki Greece, aims to provide a general framework illustrating the main representation trends in the reporting of migration-related topics by various media organizations in Turkey. In addition to reporting, MMA has provided visualization and video production support for all the publications of “Along the Balkan Route Research Series” to expand the visibility of these issues in Turkey, Greece, Bosnia Herzegoniva and Crotia
By the support of TEAM4TEAM Civil Society Partnership Exchange Program and in cooperation with the Sunny Days Stichting’s “Living Library Erasmus+ Youth Exchange Program”, we organized an awareness training & workshop with young participants from different European Union countries on hate speech against refugees in the media. Within the scope of the workshop, in-depth interviews were conducted with young participants from Spain, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Romania, North Macedonia and Turkey. The documentary video produced as the final result of the project reveals that discrimination and hate speech, regardless of country, are fed by "disinformation", "prejudice" and "xenophobia" spreading through the discourses in the media.
